Plant Details:

Collapsible content

Mature height

A low-growing fern, typically reaching about 1–1.5 feet tall.

Mature width

Spreads via rhizomes to form a wide, dense clump, easily reaching 2–3 feet across.

Spacing

Ideal for hanging baskets or wide, shallow pots that give its fuzzy rhizomes room to creep and spread.

Evergreen/Deciduous

Evergreen

Foliage

Features arching, deep green, glossy fronds that are highly variable in shape. The fronds are irregularly lobed, giving them a distinct paw-like appearance, and grow from thick, furry, creeping rhizomes.

Flowering Period & Fruit

Like all ferns, this plant does not produce flowers. It reproduces via spores, which appear as small, rust-colored dots on the undersides of the fronds.

Sun Tolerance

Prefers low to medium indirect light. A spot protected from any direct sunlight is ideal, as the sun will scorch the fronds. An excellent choice for shadier spots.

Maintenance

Easy to Moderate. More tolerant of occasional drying out than other ferns. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry. It appreciates higher humidity but is adaptable to average household conditions.

Root System

Grows from a thick, surface-creeping rhizome. This requires a very airy, well-draining potting mix (like an orchid mix) to allow the rhizome to breathe and prevent rot.
