Plant Details:

Mature height

Grows to be a medium-sized tree, typically reaching 30–50 feet.

Mature width

Develops a broad, rounded crown with a spread of 30–50 feet.

Spacing

Plant at least 20–25 feet away from buildings, driveways, and other trees to allow for its mature spread.

Foliage

Features large, heart-shaped leaves with a serrated margin. The leaves are notable for being variably lobed (mitten-shaped) or unlobed on the same tree, with a dull dark green color.

Flowering Period & Fruit

Produces inconspicuous flowers in spring, followed by an abundance of fruit that ripens to a deep, dark purple-black in early summer. The sweet, juicy fruit is edible but can stain hardscapes.

Sun Tolerance

Prefers full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day) for the best growth and fruit production.

Maintenance

Low. A very tough, adaptable, and fast-growing tree. Once established, it is quite drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches.

Root System

A vigorous and spreading root system. It is best to plant it away from septic systems and foundations.
