Plant Details:

Collapsible content

Mature height

In the ground, it can grow into a small tree 15–30 feet tall. When grown in a container, its size is easily maintained at 6–10 feet with regular pruning.

Mature width

Develops a broad, spreading crown that can be 15–30 feet wide. Container-grown specimens can be kept to a width of 4–8 feet.

Spacing

Plant at least 15 feet away from buildings, other trees, and walkways to accommodate its mature spread.

Evergreen/Deciduous

Deciduous. The tree will lose its large leaves in the fall and go dormant through the winter.

Foliage

Features large, deeply lobed, palmate leaves with a slightly rough, sandpaper-like texture. The foliage is a vibrant, deep green and provides a lush, tropical look during the growing season.

Flowering Period & Fruit

Produces sweet, pear-shaped fruits that ripen in late summer to early fall. Most varieties are self-pollinating and can produce fruit without a second tree.

Sun Tolerance

Requires full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day) for vigorous growth and the best fruit production.

Maintenance

Easy to Moderate. Water regularly, especially when young and when fruit is developing. Once established, it is quite drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter to encourage an open shape and improve fruit production.

Root System

Develops a vigorous and extensive root system. It is important to plant it away from foundations, pipes, and sidewalks.
