Varies widely by type and cultivar, from dwarf varieties at 6–12 inches to taller types reaching 2–3 feet.

Forms clumps 6–18 inches wide, depending on the variety's height.

Space smaller varieties 6–8 inches apart and larger varieties 12–18 inches apart to ensure good air circulation.

Tender Annual. This plant completes its life cycle in one growing season and will not survive a frost.

Leaves can be spear-shaped or ovate. Foliage color is a key feature, ranging from bright green and chartreuse to a deep, dramatic purple or burgundy.

A prolific bloomer, producing flowers from early summer until the first frost. Flower heads come in three forms: feathery 'plumes', convoluted 'cockscombs', or slender 'wheat' spikes in a brilliant array of colors. They are excellent for both fresh and dried floral arrangements.

Requires full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day) for the most vibrant colors and sturdy stems.

Low. Thrives in heat and is relatively drought-tolerant once established. Requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. No deadheading is necessary.

A standard fibrous root system. Prefers rich, well-draining soil and performs best when planted in its final location while young.
