Evergreen/Deciduous

Evergreen

Foliage

Forms a dramatic, fountain-like rosette of long, spiky, sword-shaped leaves. The foliage is typically a grey-green color with a tough texture and finely serrated edges.

Flowering Period & Fruit

A mature plant produces a central stalk with flowers that develop into a single pineapple. While the ornamental fruit is edible, it is typically smaller and more tart than store-bought varieties. Each plant fruits only once in its lifetime.

Sun Tolerance

Requires very bright light to full sun to encourage fruiting. Place it in the sunniest location in your home, such as near a south-facing window.

Maintenance

Easy. This is a drought-tolerant plant. Water the central 'cup' of the rosette and the soil, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. After fruiting, the mother plant will slowly decline while producing new 'pups' (offsets) from its base that can be repotted.

Root System

A relatively small and shallow root system, primarily for anchoring. Requires a very fast-draining potting mix, such as one for cacti and succulents.
