Foliage
Forms a dramatic, bird's nest-like rosette of very large, tough, leathery leaves. The leaves are elliptical or paddle-shaped, deep green on top with a stunning dark purple to maroon on the underside, and feature prominent, textural veins.
Flowering Period & Fruit
Can produce a unique and striking inflorescence on a long stalk. The bloom consists of a deep purple or reddish spadix and a smaller, contrasting spathe, rising from the center of the plant with a distinct appearance.
Sun Tolerance
Prefers bright, indirect, or filtered light. While the leaves are tough, they will scorch and discolor in harsh, direct sunlight.
Maintenance
Moderate. Water thoroughly once the top few inches of the potting mix have dried out. Does not tolerate wet feet and is sensitive to overwatering. Appreciates moderate to high humidity.
Root System
A robust, epiphytic root system that grows best in a very coarse, fast-draining medium (such as an orchid mix) that allows for excellent air circulation.
